Mija Expertly Blends Diverse Sounds On New Hour Long Mix "MIXTAPE_01"

$

0

If there were any lingering doubts about Mija’s versatility as a producer, DJ, or creative force, the last few weeks have definitively put them to rest. Just a few days ago she released her seven-track debut EP titled HOW TO MEASURE THE DISTANCE BETWEEN LOVERS and it was an innovative departure from anything we’d heard from her before. Longtime followers of Mija may associate her sound with upbeat, fast paced electronic tracks such as “Better” with Vindata, but Mija’s newest project represented a toned-down focus on blending organic and synthetic sounds in impressive new ways.

Fans of Mija’s new direction can further explore this soundscape on her new hourlong mix titled MIXTAPE_01. One glance at the track list will speak to the mix’s impressive sonic diversity that Mija excels at seamlessly blending into one cohesive vibe. Not unexpectedly, genres are completely disregarded and a wide range of artists including Tycho, Bjork, Tennyson, Camelphat, and Virtual Riot make the cut. The mix is peppered with tracks from Mija’s debut EP, including a captivating introduction using “5AM in Paris”, a beautiful vocal debut with “Notice Me”, and a haunting finish incorporating “Bad For U” Ft. Kelli Schaefer.

We’re hoping that the “_01” at the end of the mix title means there’s more to come. You can catch Mija right now on her Never Be Alone tour, and check out MIXTAPE_01 below. Enjoy

Getter has done producers around the world a favor and recorded a new Beat Breakdown video for his versatile new track "Colorblind." In the video, Getter discusses the inspiration for the tune as well as specific plugins and techniques he used. He takes questions at the beginning and the end all the while entertaining us with his over-the-top persona and style.

Getter discusses the inspiration behind "Colorblind," opening up about the depression he was experiencing when he wrote the song on his way to Budapest. Tired of dealing with fair-weather friends and toxic relationships, Getter wanted the track to be a "fuck you" song, which he says, like his other tunes, encapsulated his mood at the time.

Getter goes into the technical details behind the making of "Colorblind" breaking down the layers of the lead synth at the drop and shows the different techniques he used on both the original song and final version.

Samples from in the track include Crash Bandicoot, a hyena from The Lion King, and clowns. Getter dissects the metal outro of the song, showing us how he used AmpleMetal Eclipse and Superior Drummer to achieve realistic guitar and drum sounds. He gets into the technical mixing of the song and discusses his hardware setup for mixing. These topics are just a fraction of those covered in the full video, which you can check out below. Be on the lookout for more tips and tricks in the future and enjoy!

Each of Ekali’s Awakening mixes are full of gems, and his latest is no different. With multiple Ekali edits and unreleased tracks, one that stood out to us was the NGHTMRE remix of Ekali & ZHU’s next level recent collaboration “Blame.”

Ekali works the NGHTMRE edit into his original starting at 33:39 and it really takes off during the drop. NGHTMRE incorporates parts of the original while making it own with his new percussion, a re-worked, hard-hitting experimental trap drop that takes everything to a new level before lush synths and bright vocal chops kick in. We’re not sure if or when this version is seeing a release date but we really hope it’s soon. Stay tuned for more and enjoy!

Hip-Hop Duo Earthgang Signed To J. Cole's Label Share EP Single "Nothin' But The Best" Ft. Ari Lennox

When rising hip-hop duo EarthGang signed to J. Cole's Dreamville label last year, they announced they would be releasing three EP's before their next album. They dropped the Rags EP in September, the Robots EP in October, and now are gearing up for the Royalty EP to release this Friday, February 23rd. Today they released the lead single from it, "Nothin' But The Best," which features Dreamville labelmate Ari Lennox.

The Atlanta rappers have really settled into their sound with these new EP's, infusing a classic hip-hop sound with contemporary southern elements. This new single follows this style with a walking bass and keys that sound like they were pulled from a 90's Nas track, creating the perfect backdrop for their intricate lyrics and flows. Ari Lennox lends her voice for the chorus which splits up Johnny Venus' and Doctor Dot's verses nicely, further demonstrating the chemistry all these Dreamville artists have together.

EarthGang are currently touring the country with J.I.D., and if they're coming to your city that is not a show to be missed. After their third EP in the trilogy this week, EarthGang will be releasing Mirror Land, their new album, sometime in 2018. Enjoy!

PREMIERE | Nurko Impresses On Emotional Melodic Bass Track "Million Birds" Ft. Elle Vee

Rising electronic producer Nurko is back on TSIS with another powerful addition to his budding discography. The New Jersey-based producer has a melodic, “wall of sound” aesthetic that can be twisted to create uplifting chord progressions or dark, emotional choruses. His TSIS debut “Let Me Go” feat. Alina Renae via Lowly Palace took his sound in a darker, longing direction that resonated with listeners.

Today we're pleased to have another premiere from Nurko. “Million Birds” featuring Elle Vee is a much happier spin on Nurko’s sound. Layered chord progressions slowly swell underneath Elle’s soaring vocals before bursting into a melodic wave of sound that cuts in and out with powerful kicks. This production style is sure to attract fans of Illenium, Seven Lions or Said The Sky to Nurko’s growing following. Enjoy!

Party Pupils are an impressive production / vocalist duo who have been pushing the "future funk" genre forward and have impressed us time and time again. Just over a year ago, the duo crushed their rendition of Outkast’s “Ms. Jackson”, amassing millions upon millions of streams on Spotify and SoundCloud, establishing themselves as go-to artists for future funk. Future funk has all the elements that you would recognize in a future-bass track, but with quicker, groovier feel than you would expect. They started rolling out original tracks like "Over & Under" and "Patient" building on their unique sound we already love.

Party Pupils’ latest track is a modern spin on Montell Jordan’s classic 90’s throwback “This Is How We Do It” that we're excited to be premiering on TSIS. For this tune, the duo is accompanied by their vocalist MAX's past collaborator Audien, who proved to be the perfect match for their funky sound. The result of this collaboration is a buzzing party-starter that's already sounding like a hit.

Deadmau5 Tells Story Of How He Spent $15,000 On The 'Rick & Morty' McDonalds Szechuan Sauce

$

It’s no secret that deadmau5 is a fan of the popular animated show Rick & Morty, but now you can hear the crazy story of how he spent $15,000 on dipping sauce featured in the show, only to give it away to his fans.

If you’re a fan of either deadmau5 or Rick & Morty you might remember the crazy hype and disastrous outcome of the re-release of McDonalds’ Szechuan Sauce, a long-canceled dipping sauce originally released in 1998 as part of a promotional campaign for Disney’s then-new movie Mulan. The sauce received a wave of new interest after it briefly appeared as a plot point in an episode of Rick & Morty, and when McDonalds decided to capitalize on the hype and re-release the sauce they underestimated the dedication of Rick & Morty fans, causing an immediate sellout and many frustrated fans.

However, before the big release, a small batch of the sauce was made and one fan that managed to get his hands on a container put it up on eBay for thousands of dollars. deadmau5 wanted the sauce, and made it happen. Here’s how he describes the process:

"I just kept bidding on that, and then ended up getting in touch with the guy personally about it. He said, 'Well, I've been getting all these bids, and I think a lot of them are phony...' I said, 'Okay, I tell you what. You pull it down right now, and I'll give you x-amount for it.'"

In this case, x=$15,000. After spending that much money on a sauce, deadmau5 decided to spread the love and shared it with about 1,000 of his fans at a show in Toronto, providing McDonalds chicken nuggets to enjoy with the sauce. McDonalds is currently planning a much larger re-release of the sauce.

This isn’t the only time that deadmau5 has incorporated Rick & Morty into his shows, for a special New Years show he displayed a custom Rick & Morty countdown that treated his famous Cube setup as a ticking time bomb to explode at midnight. This also isn’t Rick & Morty’s first brush with the music industry, at the end of one episode rapper Logic appeared as himself and spat an impressive verse at an in-show concert. Shout out to the team over at Billboard Dance for unearthing this gem of an interview! Listen here.

Rising Rap Duo EarthGang Share Must Hear New 'Royalty' EP

Atlanta duo EarthGang took a break from releasing music for a couple years after their sophomore album in 2015, and their new releases prove that they were taking that time to perfect their craft. They sound more refined than ever on their new Royalty EP, their third one in less than six months following the Rags EP and Robots EP.

The new hip-hop project features five tracks spanning multiple sub-genres including the single "Nothin' But The Best" and some entertaining, smoked-out skits in between to set the mood. It's clear to see what J. Cole saw in these two when he signed them to his Dreamville label; their complex, technical verses are among the best in hip-hop right now and they know how to construct incredibly catchy choruses. Members Doctor Dot and Johnny Venus are able to seamlessly infuse jazz and funk styles into their sound, and there's a good reason they have been getting comparisons to a contemporary Outkast.

Make sure to check out all three EP's in their trilogy if this is your first time hearing of them, and look out for their new album Mirror Land to drop sometime this year. Enjoy!
